PSR Colorado, the Colorado chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility, has filed on the side of the State of Colorado in a lawsuit brought by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers seeking to invalidate HB25-1161, legislation passed by the Colorado General Assembly in 2025 to require retailers to display informational labels on gas cooking stoves at points of sale. Colorado’s new labeling requirement simply ensures that consumers seeking to purchase gas cooking stoves have ready access to reliable scientific information about the health impacts caused by the indoor air pollution they emit, such as nitrogen oxide and particulate matter. The law does not restrict the sale of gas cooking stoves in any way, but only requires a label on demonstration models at retail points of sale urging consumers to be informed and providing a QR code for access to a state website offering evidence-based information on the air quality and health impacts of gas-fueled stoves.

Despite the modest nature of this simple labeling requirement, the Association argues that it violates the manufacturers’ corporate First Amendment rights. If successful, this argument could put an end to labeling requirements meant to provide information to consumers about how to protect themselves and their families from threats posed by the products they purchase.  PSR Colorado is proud to stand up for public health and for the rights of consumers to receive timely and accurate information about the pollution risks of the use of indoor gas stoves.
